Every year The University Library of Southern Denmark invites an internationally recognized researcher that in some way or the other can contribute to the development of the library’s services. The farewell fellow lecture marks the ending of the fellowship. After the lecture there will be a reception.

The role of open access with regards to bibliometrics in the merit and resource allocation system – The spectres of predatory publishing and mediocre research
In my farewell lecture at the SDU library, I would like to talk about the role of bibliometrics in the fast-coming transition towards Open Access in scientific practice during the coming years. Many EU countries have set the goal that publicly funded research should be published openly no later than 2025, but a new proposal from EU has even pushed that date back to 2020! I will address these issues based on my experiences from being a member of an expert group at the National Library of Sweden, which addressed "the role of the current merit and resource allocation system versus incentives for open access". It is evident that the stakes are very high, and that there is a distinct crossroads ahead between those who argue that the merit system needs to change to offer the opportunities to transition the system into openness, and those who argue that the core values of science, being excellence and the aspiration towards truth, will be sidestepped if other qualities are
